My very quick and dirty translation of the Syriac Peshitta version of Susanna is as follows:

**Manuscript about Susanna**

There was once a man who lived in Babylon. His name was Joichim. And he took her (to wife), a womn named Susanna, daughter of Helena [?] , and she was beautiful as well as good. And obedient to the Lord, and all her people [her parents] were righteous. And they explained clearly to her the commandments of Moses. And he, Joachim, was very rich. There was a fence around the most part [double-duty word, here] of what was his garden adjoining the house, encompassing it exactly [we would say "completely"]. And to her [the garden] gathered men in it, who were Judeans, because he was the most notable.

Then there’s some interesting stuff about how scurrilous these elders/judges were, that somehow didn’t make it into my file.

Smith's well-known description of religion, and of the academic study of religion, combines the well-known phrase "perception of incongruity" as developed by the anthropologist of mind, Jerome Bruner, and the similarly well-known phrase from Paul Ricoeur, "the symbol gives rise to thought." Did Smith mean that the perception of incongruity necessarily led to the invention of religion, or to the examination of religion?
